Conditions of Hire

Please keep in mind the following guidelines:

1. Before firing, ensure your pottery is completely dry. Check by touching the clay - if it feels cold, it's not dry yet. Drying time varies based on size and weather. Give it two weeks for most pots, and longer for thicker items.

2. Remove any glaze from the bottom of your pot, leaving a 4mm clear space. Alternatively, you can use our glaze pin to support your pot when glazing the bottom.

3. Please inform us 7 days in advance if you would like to fire your pottery. For full Kiln hire, please allow 3-4 days and for shared firing please allow 1-3 weeks for a firing depending upon load.

4. Our technician will handle the kiln loading and unloading for you. Please be aware of the small risk involved in the ceramic-making process when using the kiln. Acknowledge your understanding of this risk. Breakages are rare and typically occur when pots are not completely dry. We will inform you of any other reasons for cracks and offer advice.

5. We are not liable for any damage to your work caused by firing. Any damage to the kiln or shelves will result in a charge.

Our Commitment

We take great pride in firing your pieces in a manner that is both appropriate and safe for the work, as well as our kiln. Your satisfaction is important to us, and for this reason, we refuse firing of work that isn’t safe for the kiln or could produce damage to the equipment.

Additionally, for health and safety reasons, we will not fire anything that would create an excess of smoke, such as clay with a high amount of organic materials, or materials that would produce toxic gases during the firing. We do not do raw glazed firings.

Although we handle your work with care, we accept no responsibility for damage caused during the firing of the kilns or the handling of the work.
