We are interested in fostering dialogue between urban and rural practitioners exploring isolation and connection, if urbanity is a requirement of creative practice and how engagement with smaller creative ecosystems and communities might support more sustainable practices.

We hope to invite artists and curators from cities within the UK who are using craft skills and/or geographical environments and materiality in their work to challenge and reframe their expectation of the rural, encouraging dialogue, cross pollination of ideas and modes, education and exchange.

We are also hoping to welcome applications from regional artists committed to rurality, working outside urban contemporary art culture for 3 month residencies. Selected from a quarterly open call, you can find details on how to apply below.

Welsh Marches Artist Residency

This residency is for artists and curators committed to rurality, working outside urban contemporary art culture.

Previous Residents

Diego Sainz Garcia

Diego Sainz Garcia is currently on a Riso residency, creating a series of limited edition prints that will be available through Gather. A Hereford based artist, born in Logrono Spain, 1975.

Starting from abstract expressionism as a primitive reference, Diego Sainz Garcia’s artistic practice moves between painting and drawing with incursions into sculpture, installation and performance. Central to his work is an exploration of pictorial techniques and materials, in a constant search for an authentic language. This language is born from the subconscious and has an important component of spontaneous expression and action painting.

Joe Hemming

Ceramicist Joe Hemming joins us for a few weeks residency from mid-October to celebrate the opening of the ceramics studio. Working in clay, illustration, printmaking and sculpture, over the course of the residency, Joe will be creating a ceramic tile based work that responds to the immediate natural environment around Ludlow.
